Give Him A Scepter

After the brutal scourging by the Roman soldiers, Jesus was taken into the palace where He was ridiculed, mocked and laughed at. The record says, "And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand: and they bowed the knee before Him, and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" (Matt. 27.29)

Here was a crowning mockery; "They put a reed in His right hand." There was not only the mockery of a "crown," but also of the king's scepter. They, in derision and ridicule, gave Him a weak reed with no power at all.

There is a thought here that should cause us deep personal concern. Let us hold the picture of the soldiers surrounding Jesus in our minds and think of ourselves. Do we give Jesus only the semblance of power over our lives?

Jesus is to be the Lord (Greek: Kurios) of our lives. The Lordship of Christ is emphasized over and over again throughout the New Testament. (Acts 2.36; 10.36; 2 Cor. 4.5) The word Kurios means "sovereign ruler," implying that He is in control. We cannot have Jesus as our "Savior" until He is first our "Lord." Jesus asks, "Why call me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?"

"Crown Him Lord of all" in your heart and life! Give Him A Scepter!
