Volunteerism

We hear this word used frequently. President Clinton has made a big push for this in governmental services. In the New World Dictionary volunteerism is defined as: the theory or practice of being a volunteer or using volunteers, as, without pay, in social agencies, charitable organizations, etc.
Every person who served in the Armed Forces will tell you one of the first lessons they learned was Don’t volunteer for anything! In most cases, they did not know what was in store. To volunteer for a task with which you are perfectly familiar is quite another matter.

Unfortunately, some of the volunteer programs of the government actually involve pay for services rendered. This puts a blot on the true idea of being a volunteer. Many people would volunteer for jobs that pay! Instead of saving the government money, many of those projects cost thousands of unnecessary dollars other than salaries. Who wants to donate their services when so much waste is evident?

One of the most visible group of volunteers are those in hospitals. They perform great services. I have to admit that it is irksome to me to know that doctors can stick their head in the door for a minute and bill you for $40, that some hospital executives may get six-figure salaries, and then the volunteers give their time freely. God bless the volunteers!

The church cannot survive without volunteers. You are essential to the health of the church. Souls depend on you. Heaven’s gates are opened to others because of your love and service. Please do not wait to be conscripted. Volunteer. You will make life a joy for the head of a work committee. You will make his day! Your example may cause many others to follow in your steps.

A Military officer needed a volunteer for a dangerous mission. He said he would turn his back and would like for a volunteer to take one step forward. On turning around, there stood the men all in a straight line. He said, I am disappointed that no one volunteered. A soldier said, Sir, we each took one step forward. Are you willing to take one step forward?
