God Is Still In Business
Many people make the mistake of trying to exile God to the past. While they believe what the Bible says about God’s involvement with men of long ago, they fail to relate the God of the Bible to today’s world. They recognize God as a great figure in history, but not as an ever-present contemporary! Subconsciously, they seem to feel that God has retired. That He has become remote, aloof, withdrawn, unapproachable. For many people, God exists
out there but not
down here. But the Bible insists that God is still in business in our world. He concerns Himself with our lives in the following ways:
He Forgives Sin.
In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus sketched a portrait of a loving and forgiving Father. The scriptures note that
God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them. The Bible also says that
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins... No sin is too big for God to forgive; no sinner is too far gone for God to save. He is willing to
save them to the uttermost who come to Him with penitent, submissive hearts. The question is not, “Will God save?” but “Will I let Him save me?” The Prodigal Son found forgiveness only when he left the far country and came to his father. Grace is available for those who accept it through obedient faith.
He Answers Prayer.
Jesus insisted that prayer receives the personal attention of God. He said,
All things whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Paul was confident that God is able to do
exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think... Prayer changes things. Tennyson’s declaration is still true:
More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of. But remember that answered prayer is a blessing promised only for the obedient. Those who converse with God must live in close daily fellowship with Him.
He Cares For His Children.
This is Providence.
The righteous and the wise and their works are in the hands of God. The Bible assures that God comforts, strengthens, provides and sustains us. The Apostle Paul writes:
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. God’s providence is real but it exists as a promise to those who love Him.
And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments.
To say that God is at work in our world is
not to say that He still works miraculously through men. Those who think that God can only work in miracles fail to understood the full extent of His power or the way in which He has chosen to operate in this present age! But the Christian must never doubt that God is at work
down here as well as
out there. Victorious faith not only believes that God exists, it also believes that He has the power to reach us in our needs!
