Faith for the Journey

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11.1) The NIV reads, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” For most of us, Faith is something we have - but something that is never “fully developed.” Faith is something we grow in. Paul speaks of being “babes in Christ.” He writes of working out our own salvation. Peter speaks of “adding to” our faith the Christian values.

Faith is seeking first the kingdom of God.
Faith is doing the will of our father.
Faith is walking in the light.
Faith is going on to perfection.
Faith is letting our light shine.

It is faith that helps us overcome the world. Faith is the victory. Faith is the fuel that drives our daily walk. On a practical basis Christian faith is trusting in the power, presence and promises of God.

Faith in His presence enables. Knowing we are not alone is a powerful incentive for us to not give up and to walk where we cannot see. We can make the journey and walk the walk if we, like David, keep in mind that God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in our time of need. Even though the world be shaken, the mountains be moved and the waters of life be troubled, God is present in our lives. Jesus said, “I am with you always.” The Hebrews writer has God saying, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” Trust in his presence!

Faith in His power gives comfort. Think of it! The creator, sustainer, provider of the Universe empowers us. He is the one who makes life possible. In Him we live, move and have our being. He provides, protects and sustains us by His power at work in us. He shields us from the fiery darts of Satan, delivers us from evil, keeps us from temptation, renews and restores our soul within. He is the one who fills life’s cup to the brim and overflows it. Peter tells us that his divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and Godliness. All good gifts flow from His power. Have faith in his power at work in us.

Faith in His promises gives hope. Trusting His promises keeps us going when the road is rough and the way is dark. We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. In my Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you. So, do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. Persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised. Be confident in His promises!

For without faith it is impossible to please Him. We must believe that He exists-- that He rewards those who diligently, earnestly seek Him. God, give us faith for the journey.
